WaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa, WhaeGuru Ji Ki Fateh Jee Ayan Nu

When A Sikh Dies, What to tell Your Friends

"I shall merge in the Lord like the water in the sea and the wave in the stream. The soul will merge in God and like air I shall look upon all alike. Then why shall I come again? The coming and going is under the will of the Lord and realizing this will, I shall merge in the Lord."

Sikhism is a 500-year old religion that originated in the Panjab region of present day India and Pakistan. Sikhs today number about 25 million and can be found on all continents. The main tenets of Sikhism are belief in one God, equality of all humans, earning a living through work and sharing, recitation of Lord’s name, truthful living and struggle against injustice.

Sikhs believe that the soul is trapped in a cycle of endless rebirths - not always in the human form. The soul has to experience pleasure and pain, according to past actions, in the next form of life determined by God. Human life is a rare opportunity for salvation which comes when the soul is united with the Lord through good deeds and truthful living.

"Not by mere chatter does one attain paradise; By truthful acts comes forgiveness....Saith Nanak: From falsehood, false alone is the reward obtained."

The funeral ceremony consists of the reading of the Sikh holy scriptures, in particular Sukhmani (Psalm of Peace) followed by the Sohila. The Sohila is a hymn that is normally recited at night before going to sleep. Its recital at a funeral symbolizes the body’s eternal sleep. After the hymns all pray for peace for the departed soul. This is followed by last respects for the deceased and then the deceased is carried to the funeral pyre. Cremation is the preferred, but not compulsory, method used.

"Earn the gain you came for in this world; By the Master’s guidance, in your hearts lodge the Lord. Thus finding abode and serene joy in your true abode, Never more shall transmigration be for you."
