WaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa, WhaeGuru Ji Ki Fateh Jee Ayan Nu

In the Footsteps of the Master
Chapter 6           By Dr. Inder Jit Kaur

GURU GOBIND SINGH, THE ILLUSTRIOUS SON OF INDIA

Let us not belittle the most-effective soldier saint that India has produced by  linking the question of Khalistan projected by the lunatic, the fringe. Guru Gobind Singh created Khalistan in the heart of all his followers by stressing oneness of humanity and by directing the Khalsa he produced on the Baisakhi day of 1699 to serve humanity without discrimination.

Punjab claimed Guru's Splendid work, but it was Bihar which gave birth and it was Maharastra where he left the world. In the entire scheme of things that the Guru worked for creating fearlessness, resistance against tyranny and ceaseless remembrance of God despite odds, there was no separatism, there was no discrimination in caste, creed or State. Here is what he said:

Deora Masit Soi, Pooja Namaj Ohi
(Temple and the mosque are the same; same is worship or Namaz)

Again, Pir Budhu Shah, a Muslim saint sacrificed his two sons and a large number of his followers for the sake of righteousness that Guru fought for. There was no question of Hindu or Muslim in the analysis of the Guru. He owned and blessed righteousness , whatever it was seen and condemned falsehood even if the Sikhs showed it. There is therefore no mercy for the Sikhs who follow in words but do not obey him in practice.

The entire history of Sikhism is a saga of service and sacrifice not only preached by the Sikh Gurus but practiced by them and their followers. Unfortunately, because of narrow political ends and narrow personal gains, both the rulers in the previous Central Government and the Akali leadership bungled in displaying the Sikhs as terrorists and secessionists. The Government also bungled in trying to get away with the condemnation of the whole community for the fault of a few. I hope saner counsels will prevail among the Sikhs now that the Guru's sage advice could be considered calmly and the bloody approach on account of the fake encounters of the past could be reviewed.

One thing must be remembered. Religion and politics can mix only with one clarity. Religion, i.e. spiritual righteousness will always be dominant and no personal ends in politics or social advancement will take precedence over living the commends of the Guru Gobind Singh and quoting foreign and other Indian eminent people's opinions if our conduct does not match the commands of the master.

Guru Gobind Singh is of course great but his greatness will shine in truth when we, the adherents, will show his saintliness and his soldiery in saving the tyrannised even at the cost of our lives. That strength will come only from the devotion to live Gurbani in our lives. Will this birthday of Guru Gobind Singh produce that urge in us?
