Accession to Gurugaddi

May 25, 1606 A.D.

Special Contribution:

  • He transformed the character of the Sikh Movement and martialized it as a precaution against future contigencies.
  • He put on two swords one signifying Miri (Temporal) and other Pin (Spinitul).
  • Constructed Akal Takhat (or Akal Bunga), a seat of authority in 1608 A.D. facing Harimandar Sahib at Amritsar in Panjab.

Imprisonment

He was imprisoned in the fort of Gwalior for one year. ‘When he was released he insisted upon that his 52 fellow-prisoners, who were Rajput Rajas, should also be set free. It was agreed upon and on the orders of Emperor Jahangir, they were also released from the prison. It is on this account that Guru Sahib is deified as Bandi-chhor.

Battles

Guru Sahib fought four baffles with the Mughals during the reign of Shahjahan against

  • Mukhlis Khan at Amritsar in 1628 A.D.
  • Abdullah Khan at Sri Harigobindpur in the year 1630 A.D.
  • Qamar Beg near Gurusar in 1631 A.D.
  • Kale Khan and Painde Khan at Kartarpur in Dist. Jalandhar in 1634 A.D.

City Founded:

He founded Kiratpur city in the year 1628 A.D. in Dist. Ropar in Panjab.

Pilgrimages

He travelled extensively covering many parts of Panjab, Delhi, Pilibhit and Kashmir to meet his devotees and to inspire them to imbibe higher ideals in life.

  • Emperor Jahangir (r. 1605-1626 A.D.)
  • Emperor Shahjahan (r. 1627-1658 A.D.)

Succession to Gurugaddi

He nominated his grandson, Harirai as the seventh Guru of the Sikhs.
