VIEWPOINT
& FEEDBACK FROM THE WORLD |
I just want to offer my
condolences for the tragic slaying of Mr. Balbir Singh Sodhi in Arizona. I
wish you well during this tagic time and pray for your safety.
Scott Marticke Atlanta, Georgia

I want to extend my
condolences to the Sikh community for the unspeakable death of Balbir
Singh Sodhi in Arizona. I am appalled that an American would be so
ignorant to take matters into his own hands, and further to kill an
innocent person. I just want the Sikhs to know that not all Americans are
barbarians and that this will not be tolerated. My deepest sympathies to
his family and to all those of Sikh faith.
God Bless - Chris Butler

I am sorry to hear about
the troubles facing members of your group in the wake of the terrorism
attacks. I strongly believe these reactions are not symbolic of our nation
as a whole, but the irresponsible reactions of a few.
The United States has shown in our courts the lack of intolerance for hate
crimes. Please reach out to the leaders within the religious community for
assistance during this time.
Peace be with you,
René

Hi,
I am a non-sikh indian american and am troubled by the attacks on your
community. You have my sympathies.
I think allot of this has to do with the media coverage, which show
Afghanis and binLaden and they sometimes wear headgear similar (to the
uneducated eye) to that which is worn by Sikhs.
I was wondering if it was a requirement for Sikh men to wear thier hair in
a turban (i know not cutting thier hair and beard is) because if it isnt
and it is a tradition with a little -t- so to say then perhaps Sikhs can
forgo thier charecteristic turbans for the time being, as i dont believe
anyone would bother an indian with long hair and beard as that wouldnt
look moslem.
i dont propose for anyone to change thier religion, but perhaps this would
be a usefull adaptation in this country at this time of charged anti-moslem
feeling. please dont hold it against me, if what i am saying is against
your religion, it isnt my intent to hurt your feelings or insult your
religion, i am very concerned for the safety of OUR people here in
America.

I suggest that you
contact the churches and synagogues in your area. First find out if they
know about your religion. If they don't explain to them about your
religion and then tell them about the problems that you've been having.
They should be willing to arrange for someone from your community to talk
to their congregation.
Also contact the local public schools. I am a substitute teacher in Staten
Island. I was called to come in on Wednesday. There were few students
there but the administration were worried about possible attacks on the
Moslem students. There were no problems because most of the students are
personally known by other students. I'm sure that the schools will be open
to doing whatever they can to help to prevent violence against your
community.
I'm a Jew. I heard about the attacks on ABC-TV and I was very upset.
